Unfortunately, the USA operates on local liquor laws, which may vary from county to county and city to city. So one county may have no alcohol sales at all, the next one over may not sell it in a store but may have it available by the glass in a restaurant, whilst another neighbor may allow alcohol for sale everywhere, all day, every day (except perhaps on Sunday - Sunday is a day many "wet" places don't allow alcohol sales). It means you have to be constantly aware of where you are (and now we know that DC doesn't allow alcohol sales, at least in stores, on Sunday, whilst Alexandria, which is an independent city in Virginia, does).
