(more than) grape juice
Wine and pregnancy don't go together too well. Which leaves grape juice. We have that at home from time to time anyway since our son (4) is partial to it. Today's juice, though, had little to do with the grape juice you normally get:
Winemaker's varietal grape juice, then, that's supposed to let you taste the characteristics of a grape. Blackberries with almonds, raspberries and cherries - indeed you can just about recognise the Spätburgunder. It's very sweet, evidently, but also very pure, with no bitter- or harshness. The great aromatics may be due to sensitive winemaking, since the winery works biodynamically and is "Demeter"-certified, thus holding the most reputable German certificate for that philosophy.
Also, the label is nicely informative about the vineyard (Langenlonsheimer Steinchen), the soil, the date of picking, even the weather ("herrliches Spätsommerwetter"), finally the must weight (86 Oechsle, that would make a dry Spätlese of about 12.5 % alc.).
The winery offers a package of this and two more vintage grape juices from different varieties (Riesling and Kerner) together with the corresponding regular wines (www.zwoelberich.de, 54 €). Trying the juice and then the wine promises new views on characteristics and flavours, and insights into the process of wine making.
I haven't tried that, for obvious reasons, but this special grape juice (known as "Kinderwein" in our household) was nice enough.
Carried in Munich by manufactum brot & butter (www.manufactum.de/Kategorie/-58/.html) - for a price that shall be covered in respectful and rather shocked silence here.
